Granting Group Edit Access to a Category

A Group with all its members can be granted access to a specific Element or Dataset that is a part of the Category, but that doesn't give it access to the Category itself. This article describes what steps an Admin should take to grant the Group View and Edit Access to a Category.

Category Creation Privilege

The Privilege to create a new Category is granted to every Power User by default, so all the PU Group members have it. Regular Users can't create Categories and can inherit from the Group only the View Access to an existing Category.

Granting View Access

View Access to the Category allows Group Members to find the tiles that are included in the Category on the Homepage. Power User members can also see the Category to which they have Permission in the Categories list.

If an Administrator gives the Group only the Permission to view the Category, it won't be shown on the member's Homepage until the User tries to find the tiles it includes via the Search bar. To see all the available Element tiles on the Homepage, the Group with all its members has to be granted the "See Categories on Homepage" Privilege.

The Permission can be given from the Category Editor and from the Group Editor.

Give Permission from Category Editor

Access Content > Categories and click the necessary Category Active Name link to open the Category Editor

  1. [Permissions]
  2. [+Group Access To Category]
  3. Group: Select the Groupr to which access is granted
  4. Grant conditional edit permission to Power User members: Leave the "No"option
  5. [Save]
  6. [Close]
Give Permission from the Group Editor

Access Admin > Users & Groups > Groups tab and click on the Group's Active Name link to open the Group Editor

  1. Go to the Elements tab
  2. [+Category To Group]
  3. Category: Select the category from the dropdown
  4. Grant Conditional edit permission to Power User members: Leave the default "No" option
  5. [Save]

With this Privilege Group members are able to see all the available Elements sorted by the Category on the Homepage.

Access Admin > Users & Groups > Groups tab and click on the Group's Active Name link to open the Group Editor

NOTE: "See Categories on Homepage" Privilege can be a part of a Privilege Set. Assigning Privilege Sets rather than specific Privileges is recommended in Metric Insights, so check the Privileges List at the bottom of the page. If the "See Categories on Homepage" Privilege is not in the list, proceed with this step.

  1. On the Info tab scroll the page to the Privileges section
  2. [+Privilege To Group]
  3. Filter the list by "see"
  4. Find the "See Categories on Homepage" Privilege and select the checkbox
  5. [Save]

Granting Edit Access

Edit Access permits Group Power User members to open the Category Editor, edit the Category and see the list of available Categories by opening the Categories entry in the Content menu. When Edit Access is granted to the Group, only the Power User members receive it. Edit Access to the Category does not grant Group PU members Edit Access to Elements and Datasets included in it.

The Permission can be given from the Category Editor and from the Group Editor.

NOTE: With this Permission, all Power User members of the Group receive Permission to Edit not only the Category, but all Elements and Datasets included in it. However, the PU's will not be able to edit the specific Element or Dataset unless they individually or the Group they are members of is granted at least View Access to the Element's Data Source and corresponding Privileges. For more information about granting access to the Elements, check the articles in this chapter.
