Granting Power User Access to Data Source
In Metric Insights, Power Users have to be granted specific Privileges and Permissions to be able to view and edit a Data Source. This article describes the steps an Administrator should take to give the Power User View and Edit access to a Data Source.
In Rel. 6.3.3, a config variable MODIFY_UNPRIVILEGED_DATA_SOURCES_VIA_API is available to allow organizations to bypass the restriction that requires a PU to have the "Create Data Source" Privilege to modify a Data Sources by Power Users with Edit Access. Its Default Value is "NO'; i.e., the restriction remains in place.
View Access to the Data Source, which is also called Use Access, is a necessary requirement for the Power User to be able to gain Edit Access to the Dataset and other Elements. Without it, the Power User will be able to see the "Datasets" and "Elements" entries in the Content menu and open the lists, but won't be able to enter the Dataset Editor.
A Power User can get access to the Data Source individually or inherit it from the Group he/she is a member of. For more details about granting View Access to the Group, check the Assigning Privileges and Permissions to the Group article.
The View Access can be granted to the Power User either from the Data Source Editor or from the User Editor.
Edit Access permits a Power User to open the Data Source Editor, edit the Data Source and see the list of available Data Sources by opening the Data Sources entry of the Admin menu. It also allows a Power User to edit Datasets and Elements created from the Data Source, as well as to create new Datasets and Elements. A Power User can grant access to the Data Source to Power Users who are members of the same Group or the ones the PU has edit access to.
A Power User can get edit access to the Data Source individually or inherit it from the Group he/she is a member of.
The Power User needs both the Privilege to add/maintain Data Sources and Permission to edit a specific Data Source.
Access Admin > Users & Groups and click on the PU's Active Name link to open the User Editor
NOTE: "Create Data Sources" Privilege can be a part of a Privilege Set. Assigning Privilege Sets rather than specific Privileges is recommended in Metric Insights, so check the Privileges List at the bottom of the page. If the "Create Data Source" Privilege is not in the list, proceed with this step.
- [+Privilege To User]
- Filter the list by "data source"
- Find the "Create Data Sources" Privilege and select the checkbox
This can be done either from the Data Source Editor or from the User Editor.
Access Admin > Collection & Storage > Data Sources and click the necessary Data Source Active Name link to open the Data Source Editor
- [+New Power User To Data Source]
- User: Select the Power User to whom access is granted
- Provide Edit Access to Power User: Select the "Yes" option
By default, Power Users who have the Edit Access can grant other PU's access to the Data Source, but it's limited to the Users that are members of the same Group. The Administrator can allow the Power User to grant access to the Data Source to any PU or Group by assigning the Allow Power Users to grant Data Source access to any User or Group Privilege.
You are done. Great job!
