Migrating Tableau Server to Tableau Cloud

This article outlines the two most common scenarios for migrating objects from Tableau Server to Tableau Cloud and mapping them to existing External Reports in Metric Insights. Follow the steps for the scenario that applies to your environment.

NOTE: Tableau Cloud does not support Web API. Only REST API is supported. The Content Loading Strategy Optional Parameter is set to "REST" by default beginning in v7.1.1.

1. Single Site Both on Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud

If the Tableau Cloud configuration mirrors the Server setup, with a single Tableau Site configured on both, no broken External Report links are expected on the Metric Insights side following the migration.

  1. Migrate Tableau Server to Tableau Cloud.
  2. In the existing Tableau Data Source, change Tableau Server URL to Tableau Cloud URL (Tableau Server field).
  3. [Test connection]
  4. Recollect Objects by clicking [Refresh List] on the Tableau Objects tab.

RESULT: All External Reports are automatically reconfigured.

2. Single Site on Tableau Server and Multiple Sites on Tableau Cloud

If Tableau Cloud has multiple Sites while Tableau Server has only one, External Reports are expected to have duplicate entries ("Version 2", "Version 3", ...) with broken linkage to Tableau objects in Metric Insights.

  1. Before running the migration, execute the SQL queries provided by support@metricinsights.com as separate Datasets and share the CSV outputs with our support. Use descriptive names for all CSVs.
  2. Migrate Tableau Server to Tableau Cloud.
  3. In the existing Tableau Data Source, change the Tableau Server URL to Tableau Cloud URL (Tableau Server field).
  4. [Test connection]
  5. Recollect Objects by clicking [Refresh List] on the Tableau Objects tab.
  6. Run the same SQL queries as Datasets and share the CSV outputs with our support. Use descriptive names for the CSVs.

RESULT: Comparing the two outputs allows us to identify broken links and proceed with remediation in your system.

Rollback Plan

If multiple External Reports have duplicates with broken linkage, or if any other unexpected behavior occurs after migration, you can revert all Objects to point back to Tableau Server.

  1. In the Tableau Data Source, change the Tableau server field value back to Tableau Server.
  2. [Test connection]
  3. Recollect Objects by clicking [Refresh List] on the Tableau Objects tab.

RESULT: All External Reports are re-linked to Tableau Server.
