What Types of Users Exist in Metric Insights?

User is a person who has an account in Metric Insights. Types of Users are as follows:

User Type Capabilities
System Admin
  • System Admin can perform any action in the system without any restrictions and maintain all types of objects and see all data
  • Has all Privileges and Permissions automatically
  • Can access the editor of any object and see all of its settings and/or data
  • Receives notifications for errors and can be listed on error pages as a contact point
Admin

Has all Privileges and Permissions automatically and can perform almost any function in the system, except for:

  • Maintaining System Variables 
  • Maintaining System Backups 
  • "Logging in as" other Users
  • Editing Admin accounts 
Power User
Based on assigned Privileges and Permissions, can see selected Elements and objects, organize their content into Favorites, Folders and Bursts, maintain personal settings,  create content and maintain objects that the PU creates or to which the PU has been granted Edit Access
Regular User Based on assigned Privileges and Permissions, can View selected Elements and objects, organize their content into Favorites, Folders and Bursts and maintain personal settings but cannot create content or edit other objects

Users can be included to Groups. Groups can be created to allow Members (Power Users and/or Regular Users) to inherit the same set of Privileges and Permissions that have been granted to the Group. Groups can be also synchronized with Active Directory via LDAP. One User can be assigned to multiple Groups.

Users can also be included to Business Units. Business Unit provides for a more accurate representation of a business, functioning as a grouping of Groups that can be used to represent lines of business or departments in an organization. A Business Unit can be associated with one or more Groups. A Group may be assigned to only one Business Unit.

Types of Users According to the Element Affinity

User Type Capabilities
Technical Owner
  • Only Power Users and Administrators can be Technical Owners
  • The Administrator or Power User that creates an Element automatically becomes the Technical Owner
  • Power User designated as the Technical Owner receives edit access to the Element, including use access to the Element's Data Source
  • The Element's tile has an Edit icon on the Power User's Homepage ONLY IF the Power User also:
    • Has been granted view access to the source Dataset, if the Element is created from a Dataset
    • If Dimensioned, has access to the Dimension and at least one Dimension Value
    • For versions prior to 6.2.3, has edit access to the element's Category 
  • When searching through the Element List (Content > Elements) and filtering by "Owner", the Technical Owner can be used to find Elements
  • If Collaborative Notifications are activated, Users can receive notifications about all comments in Elements to which they are assigned as Technical Owners
Business Owner / Data Steward
  • Any User can become a Business Owner, or Data Steward
  • Business Owner / Data Steward role does not provide the User with any Permissions or Privileges
  • When searching through the Element List (Content > Elements) and filtering by "Owner", the Business Owner and Data Steward can be used to find Elements
  • If Collaborative Notifications are activated, Users can receive notifications about all comments in Elements to which they are assigned as Business Owners or Data Stewards
